Thanks again to Jeremy at Seriously BBQ for this, it did make us chuckle, so here are some of the hangover cures from the past. Jeremy Fowler scoured through his collection of antique cookbooks to come up with a few traditional tips for us. This recipe for Drunkard’s Soup is an 18th century remedy…

  • 12lb butter
  • 1 lb onions, sliced thinly
  • 1 bottle champagne
  • Camembert cheese

Method: Saute the onions in the butter until soft, then decant into a soup tureen. Pour in the champagne, and cover with a layer of well-scraped Camembert and breadcrumbs, then bake in the oven until crisp.

Alternatively, you could try the more appetising cure-all from second century Greek physician Galen, who advised eating two slightly boiled eggs.

Jeremy has also supplied us with another useful little recipe for all the men… to cure brewer’s droop!. All you need to do is burn together the livers of a frog and a hedgehog, then place the ashes in a bag and carry it around with you at all times to prevent impotence. Should your loyalties lie with the hedgehog, you could take the late 18th century amendment to the list of ingredients, caused by a national shortage of hedgehogs and simply substitute a little strychnine… Cheers Jeremy!
